Gin Lovers

Fado performers at a restaurant

Fado at Gin Lovers

You might stumble into a tiny Fado concert, as we did, in the towering atrium of this “shopping mall” (no Kohl’s or Cinnabon inside; lots of locally-made goods). Housemade gin, creative cocktails, and elevated food—we loved the Pica Pau and Deconstructed Bacalhau.

Zenith

A crowded café in Lisbon

Zenith

Packed but friendly, this brunch hideaway has sweet and savory pancakes, benedicts, shakshuka, and sangria!

Manteigaria

The pastel de nata custard tarts are a must-try in Lisbon. Watch them being made here, then dive into one or a half-dozen.

Loja das Conservas

You probably aren’t as fanatical about tinned seafood as I am, but if you’re curious at all, be sure to visit this little store that has canned sardines, mackerel, and octopus, and more from boutique producers.

Scoop n Dough

Eclairs

Scoop n Dough

I had no idea, until leaving Portugal, that the ice cream and doughnuts are all vegan here. Don’t let that stop you—we visited two or three times, blissfully unaware.

A Indústria

Men's Apparel Store

A Indústria

In the same building as Gin Lovers, you’ll find this men’s apparel store. Most of the goods are handmade in Portugal. After buying just a single t-shirt there, I feel the need to return and pick up a laptop case, backpack, maybe a bunch more…

Livraria Bertrand - Chiado

I have to admit that one of my primary reasons for ducking into the world’s longest-operating bookstore was to indulge in the air conditioning. However, we walked out with a good mix of Portuguese and English books. The space has plenty of little hallways to get lost in, and chairs to sit and read.
